Turtle Survival Alliance Gratitude Bracelet
Even as many people cherish their memories of catching box turtles as kids or glimpsing a sea turtle in the ocean, sadly, the group as a whole has become one of the most endangered in the world. More than 60% of all existing turtle and tortoise species face imminent risk of extinction. Now, some species are hanging on by the thinnest of threads, with only a handful remaining. While the threats to turtles are many, one of the most pressing is illegal poaching. Freshwater turtles and tortoises are being pulled from the wild by the thousands, ending up as meat, used in traditional medicines, or as part of the international pet trade.
With a vision of zero turtle extinctions in the 21st century and a mission to transform passion for turtles into effective conservation action, the Turtle Survival Alliance was formed in 2001. In the 20 years since, Turtle Survival Alliance has become recognized as a global force in turtle conservation, known for taking swift and decisive action to protect critically endangered turtles and tortoises. Turtle Survival Alliance works in turtle diversity hotspots around the globe and has built comprehensive field programs in Madagascar, Myanmar, Colombia and India, as well as projects in the USA, Belize, and throughout Southeast Asia, all to save the world’s most threatened turtles and tortoises from extinction.
Turtle Survival Alliance and its partners work every day to: 1) restore turtle populations in the wild where possible; 2) protect highly threatened species in captivity; and 3) build capacity to restore, protect and conserve species within their home countries. Turtle Survival Alliance cares for thousands of turtles and tortoises that have been confiscated from poachers, breeds threatened turtles in secure conservation centers to release back into the wild, and conducts cutting-edge science and research to ensure that no turtles go extinct on our watch.
Supporting Turtle Survival Alliance helps to ensure a future where turtles and tortoises thrive. Together with supporters and partners around the world, we can keep wild turtles safe from the threat of imminent extinction.
