“Collaborating with the amazing Morgan Rhea on a design to represent the state where I was born and raised, and where we proudly raise our children, has been such a humbling and heartwarming experience. In drafting the design, I wanted to pay tribute to some of the people and places that helped shape me.
Each person represents a specific memory:
The canoe is from time spent with my father in his old fishing boat at Babcock State Park. West Virginia day in my family was always the official start of our summer. Year after year, we would spend that weekend fishing, camping, and that’s where I truly learned to appreciate the beauty of our Mountain State.
The hiker is designed in memory of my wife’s grandfather, her beloved Pappy, who was never seen outside without his signature straw sun hat and hand whittled walking stick. Her pappy was a doting husband, father and grandfather; a craftsman, a gunslinger, and lead singer of a gospel group, as you can see with the musical notes accompanying him as he climbs our majestic mountains.
Finally, the parachuting character is symbolic of all the wonderful people I met while filming Bridge Day many years ago. They came from all around the world, and for one day got to experience why I’m so proud to call this place home. Bridge Day is so much more than an event, it’s a celebration of this wild and wonderful state of ours.
But what I truly hope to represent in this sketch is the real beauty of West Virginia; it’s people. As the great John F. Kennedy once said, “The sun does not always shine in West Virginia, but the people always do.”
